Introduction

Before You Spend Another Dollar Trying to Grow Your Business, Find Out Where You May Already Be Losing Customers.

A practical, 15-point annual health exam for local business owners. Identify missed demand, lost inquiries, neglected customer relationships, and visibility gaps—and learn what to do about them.

Imagine going for your annual physical. You feel fine. You're working hard. Everything seems normal. But the tests reveal a few things you couldn't see from the outside.

Your business can work the same way. Revenue may be coming in, employees may be busy, and marketing may be running. Yet customers could be choosing competitors before you ever get a chance to speak with them. People could be visiting your website without contacting you. Your database could contain previous customers who would welcome a timely, relevant follow-up. And potential buyers may be researching what you sell without ever discovering your company.

This report isn't here to tell you to buy more advertising. It's here to help you examine the systems you already have. Each checkpoint takes only a few minutes to begin. You'll learn what to check, what a warning sign looks like, and what to do next. Many remedies are do-it-yourself. Others need deeper diagnostic work. Either way, the first step is knowing where to look.

How the exam is organized

  • Part 1 · Discovery — can nearby customers find you in Google, Maps and AI answers?
  • Part 2 · Conversion — when they find you, does your website turn interest into a call or booking?
  • Part 3 · Finding Ready Buyers — is your marketing reaching people who are actually shopping, and what does a customer really cost?
  • Part 4 · The Hidden Database Opportunity — what are past customers and unclosed estimates worth?
  • Part 5 · Competitive Advantage — how do you compare, and what should you fix first?

Every checkpoint follows the same five steps: the problem, why it matters, a test you can run now, what your result means, and a first remedy. Start with whichever one worries you most. We Diagnose. You Decide.

A healthy business doesn't just attract attention. It gets discovered by the right people, turns interest into conversations, follows through, and earns repeat business. Let's examine those systems one at a time.

Part 1 · Discovery

Can the Right Customers Find You?

You cannot convert a customer who never discovers you.

New customers rarely search your business name. They search for a need and a place — "water heater replacement near me," "dentist 30309," "best roofer in Tulsa." Whoever appears in those moments earns the first look. Your competitors don't have to be better. They have to be found.

Owner Tip · Checkpoint 01≈ 10 min

Find out who appears instead of you on Google Maps

Problem
You get steady referrals but few new customers from search, and prospects mention competitors you've never thought of as rivals.
Why it matters
For many local searches, the map results sit above the regular listings. The businesses there get the first click and often the first call. If you don't know who they are, you can't see what they're offering that you aren't.
Test it now
In a private browser window or Google Maps on your phone, search "[your main service] in [your city]" and "[service] near me" from your service area. Write down the first five relevant businesses that appear, then open each profile.
What your result means
For each competitor, note their headline offer, review count and recency, photos, and how easy it is to call or book. If you're not in the first five, that's a discovery gap. If you are but look thinner, it's a prominence gap.
First remedy
Compare your profile with the strongest competitor and close the obvious gaps: primary category, services list, hours, real photos, and a clear call-to-action button. Repeat the search monthly and record your position.

That one search shows you where you stand in traditional local results. The rest of Part 1 covers a newer front door — AI assistants — and the business details that both Google and AI tools rely on.
